Parent–Teen Relationships

Growing independence and family boundaries can create conflict. Stable relationships combine respect, safety, clear expectations and repair after difficult conversations.

For adult caregivers of 14–17-year-olds | Research draft | Not diagnostic

What caregivers may notice

  • Conversations quickly escalate into shouting or shutdown
  • Communication is limited to grades and rules
  • Threats, violence or coercive control are present

What caregivers can do

  1. Discuss one specific issue at a calm time
  2. Explain the reason, scope and review date for a boundary
  3. Pause escalation and name a time to return to the conversation

When to seek more help

  • Conflict repeatedly disrupts family life
  • Communication has broken down for a prolonged period
  • Violence, abuse, coercion or sexual harm needs a protection pathway, not ordinary communication advice
